Department:Development
Description

Intelligent Imaging Innovations (3i) is seeking an Optical Engineer to join our team in Denver, Colorado.  3i is a global organization that designs and manufactures cutting edge live cell and intravital microscopy imaging platforms. Our collective aim is to provide advanced multi-dimensional microscopy platforms that are intuitive to use, modular in design, and meet the evolving needs of investigators in the biological research community.

3i is in the most exciting chapter of its 22-year history, and is looking for exceptional, like-minded professionals to join our team and grow with us. This is a full-time, exempt position and offers a comprehensive benefits package in a pleasant, fast-paced, small company environment. Salary is commensurate with experience.

The Optical Engineer is responsible for designing precision optical systems for research microscopes and collaborating with a team of engineers and scientists to see multiple, diverse projects through from conception to production.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics with an emphasis on optics required.

More than five years of relevant design experience required.

Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering or Physics preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a key member of cross-functional engineering teams (internal and external) consisting of optical, electrical, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and quality engineers to achieve project deliverables.
  • Design, develop, build, and test optical systems used in microscopes. Illumination sources may include continuous wave lasers, ultrafast oscillators, and LEDs. Detectors may include CCD and scientific CMOS cameras, photomultipliers, and photodiodes. Spectral regimes will typically span near-UV, visible, and near-IR (350 nm to 1700 nm).
  • Design and/or specify optical components such as lenses, reflectors, filters, gratings, and detectors, both off-the-shelf and custom. Interface with vendors for optical and opto-mechanical components.
  • Analyze and optimize system performance considering optical and mechanical tolerances, thermal and vibrational issues, and detector signal-to-noise.
  • Perform hands-on work with optical components and systems. Personally perform construction and test of optical prototypes, or supervise technicians doing this work.
  • Plan and develop optical test procedures in conjunction with engineering and production to verify quality requirement guidelines. Specify and design optical alignment and test equipment for both development and production.
  • Understand customer product requirements and develop optical systems to meet those requirements.
  • Present product design, analysis, and test results to internal and external customers.
  • Understand and comply with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements applicable to our business.
  • Occasionally support production in the manufacture of optical systems.
  • Occasionally support preparation of proposals, project plans and cost estimates.
Skills & Abilities
  • Expertise in specifying, modeling, analyzing, and optimizing optical components and systems.
  • Expertise in testing optical components and systems, including designing test plans.
  • Solid foundation in both geometric and wave optics.
  • Experience designing and building prototype systems that incorporate lasers, optical and opto-mechanical components, and detectors.
  • Thorough understanding of aligning complex optical beam trains.
  • Proficiency in Zemax or similar optical design packages.
  • Knowledge of galvanometric, resonant, and MEMS mirror beam scanning methods.
  • Experience with ultrafast oscillators including pulse characterization and measurement of dispersion.
  • Fluency with scientific computing software, such as MATLAB or Mathematica.
  • Knowledge of wavefront detection is desirable.
  • Experience and skill in electronics is desirable.
  • Experience and skill in mechanical engineering, particularly as related to mounting and alignment of optical components, is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to write technical reports, work instructions, and create engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a major product or project through all phases of development: concept, design, prototype, manufacturing.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, and problem solving abilities.

Essential Requirements

  • Lift and move objects up to 65 pounds.
  • Observe and inspect equipment and operations for proper operation and compliance to safety and housekeeping standards.
  • Work in a production environment around automated equipment.
  • Work in an office environment utilizing a computer workstation.

Working Environment

Moderate physical activity.  The environment involves exposure to physical risks, such as exposure to class 3 & 4 lasers, operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals.  May involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises. Use of personal protective equipment is required to prevent exposure to hazards.

Conditions of Employment

  • Legally authorized for employment in the United States.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment background check and motor vehicle record check.
  • Agree to and sign 3i’s confidentiality, non-compete, employment agreement.
